Hello friends,

Those of you who went to Opera On Tap will appreciate Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera that captures the spirit of Christmas.

There are many performances of it, which delights me - that way, almost all of you will get a chance to see it (and hopefully share it with family and friends.)

Opera on Tap - pros sing what they want for us, free. December 11

Opera on Tap is hosting an anti-Christmas music night at Pizzeria Venti for free. Professional opera singers come out and sing their favorite songs, just for fun. Although the music is classical, the attitude is outrageous. Yes, Viking hats do happen.

I admit without hanging my head that I love Christmas music, but I will be there to enjoy the other classics.

See Grainger McKoy's Bird Sculptures Free At The High Museum of Art - Dec. 3rd

Recently, I went with my friend and fellow artist, Morgan, http://www.jmorganstudio.com/ to see Grainger McKoy's incredibly ornate bird sculptures. We spent 2 and a half hours looking at them - marveling at them, rather. I wanted to blog about them so much, but as far as I knew, the High Museum of Art was neither free nor cheap.

On December 3, Fulton County residents can walk up to the counter for a free ticket to see this outstanding artwork. The museum is open between 10 AM and 5 PM.

The exhibit shows McKoy's work from the sketch all the way up to the final pieces. Viewers can see miniature models of the final artwork, and learn how the sculptures are constructed. Some of the birds appear to be flying because they are delicately held in the air by the wingtips of the other birds.

Then we went on to spend about five minutes looking at Picasso and Warhol. After gazing upon McKoy's fine craftsmanship and total devotion to detail, the other modern art couldn't hold our attention at all.

It was more than worth the price of admission to see McKoy's academic brilliance as a sculptor. If you live in Fulton County, you can see it for free on the first Saturday of December. Let's Start With Free Beautiful Music at Emory! 2 Events, Both December 2nd.

My Nana and I were painting pottery at All Fired Up yesterday, which is across the street from Emory University. Afterwards, we decided to step on campus to see what was going on in the arts.

We had just been talking about how the arts can and should be enjoyed by ALL people, regardless of their bank statements. I worried that many people just didn't know where to look. Colleges and universities are a great place to start if you're not sure where to go for art. Most of them offer free art shows as well as musical and theater performances.

Our conversation inspired me to share the free upcoming events we found with you, my friends and community.

Water Quartets - Friday, December 2, at 1 PM

Vega String Quartet plays compositions written by Emory University music students in Professor John Anthony Lennon's composition class. These compositions are centered around the theme of water.

Traditional Tibetan Sacred Music - Friday, December 2 at 7:30 PM

In this concert, Techung, an internationally known Tibetan musician and newly appointed Emory University artist affiliate, will perform ancient and modern pieces taken from the rich but not widely known lay Tibetan musical tradition. He will be accompanied by Guang Wang, cellist for Vega String Quartet, Emory University’s quartet in residence. The musical selections, both instrumental pieces and songs, have three primary themes: spiritual teachers, sacred places and divine figures.
